What is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy?

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a special form of manual therapy that involves internal and/or external techniques to evaluate and treat female and male pelvic floor dysfunction. The pelvic floor muscles are a group of muscles that attach to the front, back and sides of the pelvic bone and sacrum. These muscles have important roles including:

  • Maintaining continence of our bladder and bowel
  • Providing support to our internal organs including the bladder, uterus, and intestines
  • Providing support for our low back
  • Allowing sexual function
  • Helping our circulatory system get the blood and body fluids from the legs back to the heart

Pelvic floor physiotherapy works on identifying pelvic floor dysfunction and works towards creating a program specific for you to help alleviate your present concerns.

What conditions can Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy treat?

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy can treat a variety of conditions. Some of the most common conditions include:

  • Incontinence or leakage
  • Urinary urgency or frequency
  • Constipation
  • Acute or chronic pelvic pain
  • Low back pain or hip pain
  • Rectus diastasis or “mommy tummy”
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction related to pregnancy: pre-natal and post-partum muscle changes
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Pelvic congestion
  • Vaginismus
  • Vulvodynia
  • Dyspareunia (painful intercourse)
  • Nocturia (excessive urination at night)

How is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy utilized at Neurocore?

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is provided at Neurocore by a specially trained physiotherapist who has undergone post-graduate certifications in pelvic floor rehabilitation. Our physiotherapist will take you through a comprehensive initial assessment focusing on your present condition and health history. Our physiotherapist will also conduct a complete physical assessment of the joints and tissues affecting the area, which may include an internal and external pelvic floor examination to identify areas that may be contributing to your present concerns. Based on the assessment, our therapist will provide an individualized rehabilitation plan for you which includes education, exercises, pain management strategies, and will also discuss frequency and duration of follow-up treatments as appropriate.

Have more questions? Feel free to contact our clinic and set up a complimentary 10-minute phone consult with our therapist to find out if pelvic floor physiotherapy is right for you!
